While Ethereum reigns supreme as the leader of the altcoins, numerous other projects have emerged hoping to find a seat at the top of the ranks along the likes of Binance Coin (BNB), Cardano (ADA), Ripple (XRP), and Solana (SOL). Each of these competitors bring their own unique perspectives and solutions to the world of crypto, looking to remedy some of the shortcomings of Ethereum, with one particularly interesting example being Pulsechain.


PulseChain is a yet-to-be-released hard-fork of the Ethereum network, founded by entrepreneur, YouTuber, and philanthropist Richard Heart. The project aims to tackle two of Ethereum’s biggest issues: its high cost of gas fees and its environmental impact. One of the biggest complaints about using Ethereum is the expensive gas fees associated with transactions, with something as simple as a token swap easily costing over a hundred dollars in fees during times of high network activity. Another widely documented facet of the ETH network is its large carbon footprint and environmental impact due to its Proof of Work (PoW) consensus mechanism, though this is changing to the much more environmentally friendly Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus with the upcoming release of ETH 2.0. Unlike Ethereum, PulseChain will utilize a PoS consensus mechanism right from the beginning and have much cheaper network fees, as well as faster transaction times. Its native token PLS will be what powers the ecosystem, much like Ether (ETH).


Perhaps the most unique aspect of PulseChain is that sometime before launch, a snapshot of the entire Ethereum blockchain will be taken and used in the network, resulting in a duplicated PulseChain version of every existing ERC-20 token (called PRC-20 tokens) and airdropping those copies directly to the wallets of their holders, something the team’s lauding as the biggest airdrop in the history of cryptocurrencies. It should be noted, however, that at launch these duplicated PRC-20 tokens will have their value decided by the market and not necessarily by the value of their original ERC-20 token counterparts. At this time of writing, there is no official release date for the PulseChain mainnet nor PLS token just yet, though a second version of its testnet is currently undergoing testing.


As for whether or not PLS would make a good investment, it’s up to the individual to decide. If you have done your own research and you believe PulseChain would make a viable Ethereum contender and has the chance to succeed with its ecosystem, go for it. However, it’s important to be aware of the risks associated with investing in any speculative digital asset. The PulseChain site itself has a lengthy disclaimer page that sums it up best: “[Y]ou should have absolutely no expectations of any sort regarding anything, and if anything goes wrong, you shouldn't look for redress anywhere, and you should receive none. Everything is subject to change at anytime [sic]. Software is hard. Blockchain software is harder. Everything could go terribly wrong, and you would be out of luck. We're lucky any of this stuff works at all”.
