How to Upload a Document Into a Blockchain

Uploading a Document to a Blockchain

To the uninitiated, “blockchain” may be nothing more than an abstract techy buzzword that has something to do with cryptocurrency and/or NFTs. Many erroneously believe blockchains are used for the direct storage of files and other media, but in reality, they don’t typically host uploaded files in the way that a service like Google Drive or Dropbox does, primarily due to things like file size limitations and the high cost of gas fees these types of uploads would require. Instead, most blockchains host lightweight transactional records relating to their respective native coin or token, acting as a distributed decentralized ledger.

But if you did want to upload a file such as a photo, movie, or document in a secure way using blockchain technology, how would you? For that, you’d need to utilize a peer-to-peer decentralized storage-based platform such as the Interplanetary File System (IPFS) , Filecoin, Storj, or Sia. These types of platforms can be a little more technical to get started with, but offer a unique way of securely storing your files using blockchain technology across a network of peers who can keep your files up indefinitely as long as at least one node in the network with your file(s) remains online.

Of the above platforms mentioned, IPFS is arguably the most popular and has become the go-to standard hosting service for everything in Web3 from website hosting to NFT hosting solutions. IPFS uses a cryptographically hashed content addressing protocol which identifies files based on their content as opposed to traditional web file paths (such as https:// ) which identify files based on where they’re located on a hard drive or server.

In order to store a file on the IPFS you will need to either download their all-in-one desktop application, manually set up and run your own node, or pay a pinning service such as Pinata to do so for you. In terms of accessing content that’s hosted on IPFS, you can use the previously mentioned desktop application, a public gateway such as https://ipfs.io or https://cloudflare-ipfs.com or find a web browser that supports direct IPFS links such as Opera or Brave.
