2022: Best NFT Games to Play and Invest

In recent years, there’s been a surge of newly developed and released play-to-earn (P2E) blockchain-based videogames, combining elements of decentralized finance, cryptocurrencies, and gaming into an exciting emerging space that’s being dubbed GameFi. In this article, we’ll be highlighting a few P2E games with established player bases, as well as those which have seen notable growth in the last couple months that are worth considering playing and investing in during the month of February.

Axie Infinity

Genre: Collectible turn-based, card-based battle game with additional breeding mechanics Blockchain: Ethereum, Ronin (Ethereum sidechain)
Primary Token(s): Axie Infinity Shards governance token ($AXS), Smooth Love Potion in-game breeding token ($SLP) Available on: PC, Mac, Android, iOS The basics: Arguably the most well-known blockchain-based P2E game, Axie Infinity is a turn-based, card-based battle game with additional breeding mechanics. Before you can play, you’ll need to purchase 3 virtual NFT fantasy creatures called Axies, either from their in-game marketplace or a third-party marketplace, each with their own unique classes, skills, abilities, and stats. Players put together teams of 3 Axies and can battle computer-controlled enemies in Adventure Mode or against real people in Arena Mode to earn $SLP tokens as rewards, which can then be cashed out to ETH or other cryptos. Users can also breed their Axies using $SLP tokens and if desired, their offspring can be sold on an NFT market for a profit. Where to learn more: their official website and their whitepaper page

Alien Worlds

Genre: Economic simulation/strategy game Blockchain: WAX, Ethereum, and Binance Smart Chain Primary Token(s): Trilium ($TLM) Available on: PC, Mac The basics: Alien Worlds is a futuristic metaverse comprised of six planets, each of which have their own unique DAOs (Decentralized Autonomous Organizations). Players compete to mine the game’s precious resource trilium, which doubles as the game’s native token $TLM through completing missions, battling other players, or buying several types of NFTs – land, tools, minions, weapons, avatars, and missions. $TLM can also be staked to each planet, which is used for voting governance in each DAO, allowing players to elect councilors who can then hear proposals and vote on using planet treasury funds for each proposition. In order to start earning $TLM, players will need to initially purchase 10 $WAX tokens and stake them to the network’s CPU, then they can dive in with the above earning mechanisms. Splinterlands

Genre: Collectible turn-based trading card battle game, inspired by Magic the Gathering and Hearthstone Blockchain: Hive with token bridging available to Ethereum, Tron, WAX, and Binance Smart Chain Primary Token(s): Dark Energy Crystals in-game rewards token ($DEC), Splintershards governance token ($SPS) Available on: PC, Mac, iOS, Android The basics: Splinterlands is a collectible turn-based trading card battle game where users can compete against one another to earn Dark Energy Crystal tokens ($DEC) as rewards. The game is free-to-play, but in order to start earning rewards for gameplay, players will need to purchase the Summoner’s Spellbook item for $10, then they can start building their deck via booster packs or buying individual cards from the in-game marketplace. There are two types of cards in Splinterlands: summoners who use magic to summon monsters and monsters themselves which do the fighting in-game. In the game world, there are six sources of magic: fire, water, earth, life, death, and dragon. Each card has a level, mana cost, abilities, and other stats that will help you put together a solid, strategic deck. Where to learn more: their official site and their FAQ page

The Sandbox

Genre: Open-world user-generated social sandbox game with an additional voxel-based NFT creator and game maker application Blockchain: Ethereum Primary Token(s): $SAND in-game currency/governance token, LAND NFTs Available on: PC, Mac, Android, iOS The basics: The Sandbox is a virtual metaverse with gameplay similar to Minecraft. Users can explore virtual worlds, socialize, build, create, play games and missions, create and show off their NFTs, and much more. The game is notable for partnering with big brands, celebrities, and properties such as Snoop Dogg, The Walking Dead, Atari, Adidas, The Smurfs and more. It should be noted, however, that the game is currently unable to be played, having temporarily closed after a recent “season 1” Alpha phase. Those who purchased an Alpha Pass NFT had access to the play-to-earn missions and could earn up to 5,000 SAND tokens for completing them, though anyone could also play the game for free during that period without earning tokens. A “season 2” Alpha phase is in the works, so stay tuned to their social media channels for further updates. Where to learn more: their official site and their detailed documentation page

Every item in the game including tools, membership cards, farm animals, and buildings are all NFTs which can be bought and sold on the game’s marketplace. In order to start playing, users will first need an in-game tool such as an ax which can be crafted using Gold and Wood tokens or bought on the marketplace. Bomb Crypto

Genre: Pixelized idle Bomberman-style hero game Blockchain: Binance Smart Chain Primary Token(s): Bomber Coin ($BCOIN) Available on: PC, Mac The basics: Bomb Crypto is a P2E game in the style of classic videogame Bomberman that’s been seeing steady growth in recent months. Before playing and earning, users will need to either mint a unique Bomb Hero NFT from within the game using 10 purchased $BCOIN tokens, or purchase a second-hand hero from the game’s marketplace. Once a hero has been obtained, players can send them into one of three game modes: Treasure Hunt Mode, Story Mode (both of which are controlled automatically and have your hero slowly bomb chests to earn $BCOIN tokens), and Battle Mode (which lets users bet $BCOIN tokens and challenge each other to a game). Heroes have limited energy and need to rest after their stamina meter runs out. To recharge them faster, players can purchase House NFTs where they can rest up quickly and get back to bombing sooner. Additionally, heroes can also have their stats upgraded using $BCOIN. Where to learn more: their official site and their detailed whitepaper page
