The New Gold Rush Isn't Gold

The New Gold Rush Isn't Gold

Cloud Rush USA: Digital Currency is the New Gold

The original Gold Rush was a significant period in California’s history between 1848 and 1855 that brought over large swathes of settlers hoping to strike it rich and change their lives for the better. The arrival of these miners and their families forever shifted the economy, population, and culture of both the Golden State and the country as a whole, and while there’ll likely never be anything quite of its same magnitude again, in the last decade we’ve witnessed the rise of a comparable phenomenon that has permanently altered the digital landscape: The advent of cryptocurrencies and the practice of mining them for rewards.

Modern miners are armed with the latest and greatest in graphics cards and computer hardware setups, as opposed to the pickaxes and shovels of their old West counterparts. The more powerful their machines, the greater the chances of receiving rewards for performing complex computational calculations on networks that utilize the proof-of-work (PoW) consensus mechanism. Their gold? Digital Currency, and plenty of it. Arguably the most popular digital asset in the world, Bitcoin is often referred to as “digital gold currency” for its scarcity and value. It’s the preferred crypto of most miners, with 90% of the 21 million that can ever exist having been mined so far.

No need to get discouraged, however, as the last Bitcoin is only expected to be mined in February of 2140.
While the earliest miners have had the most lucrative careers thus far, there are still many mining efforts ongoing to this day, both at the individual and large-scale level with no signs of slowing down. In fact, the crypto mining hardware market is projected to grow by $2.82 billion over the next four years. Corporations are also getting in on the fun, with publicly-traded companies such as Riot Blockchain (RIOT) and Marathon Digital Holdings (MARA) operating massive Bitcoin mining operations throughout the United States. Of course, Bitcoin isn’t the only crypto being mined, Ethereum is a close second and a slightly less competitive choice for many. Mining hardware for other altcoins including Dogecoin can also be found online with a quick Google search.

Whether it’s done by individuals or enterprise, crypto mining is here to stay and will only increase in volume as time goes on and technologies continue to advance. It truly is a new digital gold rush, ushering in a new era of wealth opportunities and opening doors for those who may not have otherwise had the chance to grow their fortunes.
